Multimedia Exhibition at the Long Beach Senior Arts Colony Will Feature Local Artists’ Works and Champion Positive Connections Associated with Aging and Art

LONG BEACH, Calif.—Nov. 8, 2017—SCAN, a leading senior focused organization with the mission of keeping seniors healthy and independent, today announced its sponsorship of Legacy—A Celebration of Senior Artists, a free public art exhibition presented by EngAGE from Nov. 17 to 30, 2017 at the Long Beach Senior Arts Colony. The unique art exhibit will feature 20 established and emerging senior artists from the local community.

Legacy—A Celebration of Senior Artists will include paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and photography and several of the pieces reflect the artists’ personal narratives of aging and independence. The exhibit will feature works from professional artists Cynthia Evans, Moira Hahn, Gail Werner, Uran Snyder, Slater Barron, Carol Roemer, Annie Stromquist and Sandy Abrams in addition to creations by residents of the Long Beach Senior Arts Colony. On Nov. 12 at 5 p.m., artists Slater Barron and Ethel Gross, and Denise Likar, SCAN’s vice president of community service, will discuss aging and selected works from the exhibit on KPFK radio’s Experience Talks program.

“Gone are the days when getting older meant you were done growing, learning and contributing. Many seniors today want to take advantage of this time of their lives to discover new talents, express themselves creatively, connect with others and contribute to the vitality of their communities,” stated SCAN CEO Chris Wing. “SCAN is thrilled to partner with our good friends at EngAGE to present an event that exemplifies our shared dedication to promoting opportunities for seniors to embrace perpetual purpose.”

SCAN is collaborating with EngAGE, a nonprofit that takes a whole-person approach to community and creative, healthy aging by providing arts, wellness, lifelong learning, community building and intergenerational programs to thousands of seniors living in affordable senior and multi-generational apartment communities.

“Art is a source of joy and freedom for our talented residents and senior artists. Research shows that there is a positive impact on older people who create art—they’re healthier, happier, motivated and more likely to stay mentally sharp,” said Tim Carpenter, founder and executive director of EngAGE. “As our Long Beach Senior Arts Colony approaches its fifth anniversary, we’re excited to collaborate with SCAN on this exhibit, and, we’re extremely proud of the featured artists, who embody positive connections and outcomes associated with aging and art.”

Legacy—A Celebration of Senior Artists is a free art exhibition and is one of several community initiatives SCAN has hosted this year to celebrate the organization’s 40th anniversary. The gallery will be open to the public Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the gallery will be closed Thanksgiving Day. Also on display will be an exhibit documenting SCAN’s 40 years of improving the lives of seniors in Long Beach and beyond. The Long Beach Senior Arts Colony is located at 200 E. Anaheim Street, Long Beach, Calif. For more information on EngAGE, visit: www.engagedaging.org
