Time for a Refill? We'll Remind You with SCAN Text Messages!

Taking medications as prescribed by your doctor is an important way to stay healthy and independent. SCAN provides another way to help you follow your treatment plans uninterrupted: reminder text messages whenever it’s time for a medication refill.

If your doctor has prescribed a medication for you to take on an ongoing basis, we’ll send a text message to the cellphone number we have for you when it’s time to refill that prescription.

We’ll also send you a text if a prescription refill is overdue to find out if there are reasons why you won’t be refilling it—and to help if you need it.

For more about the refill reminders, see the below Frequently Asked Questions or call SCAN Member Services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is SCAN texting me?

SCAN cares about your health and we want to help you with taking your medications as prescribed. Since many of our members have told us they appreciate the convenience of text messages for reminder-type information, we’ve started texting you to remind you to refill your prescriptions.

How can I be sure a message is from SCAN?

Refill reminder texts will be sent from 35398. When you see that number on your screen, you’ll know you can trust the message.

Tip: Add the text number to your cellphone’s contacts so you know when SCAN is texting you.

What if I don’t want to receive the text messages?

The text reminder service is completely optional and you can opt out at any time. To do so, respond to any of the reminder text messages by typing STOP. You can always re-subscribe to the service by texting RESUB to 35398.

What kind of information will I see in the refill reminder text messages?

The messages will include:

  • First four letters of the medication(s)
  • Name of pharmacy
  • Pharmacy phone number

Does it cost anything to receive the text messages?

SCAN provides this service free of charge. But it depends on your phone plan whether regular text/data charges apply. Check with your phone service carrier if you’re not sure.

Are the text messages secure (encrypted)?

The text messages to and from SCAN are not secure.

Why does the text only show the first three letters of the name of my medication followed by “XXXX”?

Protecting the privacy of your healthcare information is our priority, which is why we won’t text you the full name of your prescription.

For example, if you’re taking the diabetic medication Metformin, the refill reminder will look like this: “You’re due to refill METXXXX.”

“Msg” and “Rx” appear in the texts I’m getting. What does these mean?

“Msg” stands for “message.” “Rx” stands for “prescription.”

Why did I receive a text asking me why I didn’t refill my prescription?

We want to be sure that you’re getting what you need to be healthy and that includes treatment that your doctor has prescribed. If there are reasons that are keeping you from taking a medication prescribed by your doctor—whether you simply forgot or maybe you can’t get to the pharmacy—we want to know. There may be ways that we can help.

Always talk with your doctor first before stopping or reducing a prescribed medication.

I opted out of receiving texts earlier but I’d like to start getting them again. What should I do?

To resubscribe to SCAN’s text reminders, text RESUB to 35398.

I just received a reminder text and I don’t understand what to do.

Text back the word HELP and we’ll send you a text with the phone number and hours for SCAN Member Services. Just call us when it’s convenient for you and we’ll help you out.

I got a text reminder but my wife/husband didn’t. Why?

There may be two reasons why you’re getting text message reminders and your spouse isn’t.

First, the refill reminder texts are only being sent to members taking prescriptions for diabeteshigh blood pressure and/or high cholesterol. If your spouse isn’t taking medications for either of these conditions, he/she won’t receive refill reminder texts from SCAN.

Secondly, SCAN can only send texts to the cellphone number we have on record. If your spouse recently got a cellphone, has a new cellphone number and/or just wants to confirm the cellphone number we have on record for him/her, please have him/her call SCAN Member Services to let us know.
