Message From the CEO

A Personal Note and a Promise

SCAN CEO Sachin Jain and his father, Dr. Subhash Jain.

I’d like to use my space in this issue of the newsletter to get personal.

You see, my father died in November—just a few days before Thanksgiving.

My dad, Dr. Subhash Jain, spent most of his career as an academic pain management physician and was the founding chief of pain service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He was incredibly well-respected in the field. And, his patients adored him. He had that rare balance of deep expertise and genuine heart.

Toward the end of his life, my dad suffered from multiple chronic illnesses. He was in and out of the hospital, and we had several urgent and emergency situations. You might expect that I knew exactly what to do in those situations—after all, I’m both a physician and the leader of a healthcare company.

But I didn’t. It was humbling, frustrating and eye-opening.

I’m not alone in feeling this way. Several of my colleagues at SCAN also lost loved ones in 2023. As friends, we’ve been there for one another, offering empathy and support. As healthcare executives, our losses have galvanized our commitment to do better for our members.

We can’t change the system by ourselves, and it won’t happen overnight. But please know that you have a team at SCAN—at the highest levels—who has been in your shoes. A team who cares. And who will do what we can to help you through the health challenges you face. That was my father’s legacy, and that’s my promise to you.

Thank you.
