High Quality Senior Care

LONG BEACH, Calif.—Oct. 17, 2018—SCAN Health Plan®, one of the nation’s largest not-for-profit Medicare Advantage plans, has received a 4.5-star rating on a five-point scale for 2019 from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for the second consecutive year. The CMS rating serves as an indicator of the value and quality of SCAN’s Medicare Advantage plans. In addition, SCAN received a 90 percent member satisfaction rating as reported in the 2019 Medicare & You Handbook.

“I speak for our entire organization when I say we’re incredibly proud to have earned a 4.5-star rating two years in a row. The member satisfaction rating is especially meaningful because it’s based on plan member experience. This positive recognition is testament to the efforts of our employees, our provider partners and members, too,” said Chris Wing, CEO of SCAN Health Plan. “As the health plan, we’re always looking for how we can continue to improve, and that includes working closely with our partners. It also means ensuring our members can easily and affordably access the benefits and services available to them. We think they’ll be even more pleased with their plan in 2019.”

Established by CMS as part of an initiative to inform consumers and allow them to compare Medicare Advantage plans on objective criteria, the Star Rating System assigns a one- to five-star score to plans annually. The system weighs factors including clinical outcomes, access to preventive services and management of chronic conditions. Member satisfaction rating is based on plan member responses to the annual CMS Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers & Systems (CAHPS); survey results are published each fall.

On Oct. 1, 2018, SCAN announced its 2019 health plan benefits with many of its plans offering reduced out-of-pocket costs, in-home benefits, telehealth services and coverage for over-the-counter items. SCAN also introduced a “premium” health plan, SCAN Prime, available in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

The annual enrollment period for selecting a Medicare Advantage plan runs Oct. 15 – Dec. 7, 2018. In 2019 SCAN will continue to be available to Medicare-eligible beneficiaries in 10 California counties: Los Angeles, Riverside, Orange, San Bernardino, San Diego, Ventura, Sonoma, San Francisco, Napa and Santa Clara. The 4.5 star rating applies to all plans offered by SCAN Health Plan in 2019 except SCAN Healthy at Home (HMO SNP) and VillageHealth (HMO-POS SNP) plans. Every year, Medicare evaluates plans based on a 5-star rating system.
