SCAN Expands Northern California Footprint With Community Benefit Programs

Date Posted: 10/13/2016

(SAN FRANCISCO – October 13, 2016) — SCAN announced today that it has expanded its presence in Northern California with the introduction of two nationally recognized community benefit programs: Independence at Home (IAH) and Trading Ages.

Providing free health education, health promotion and health screenings to underserved seniors and their caregivers throughout the Bay Area, IAH offers nearly 50 health education presentations covering a range of topics—from medication safety and chronic disease management to fall prevention, bone health basics and living with arthritis. IAH can accommodate requests for these presentations in other languages to serve the area’s diverse populations.

The award-winning Trading Ages™ interactive senior-sensitivity training will soon be available as well. Over recent years this much-requested program has been delivered to hundreds of organizations including schools, legislative offices and physician groups.

In the future, as SCAN becomes familiar with the unique needs and gaps in services in the area, the company will provide resource navigation to connect seniors and their caregivers to the support they need to remain safely in their own homes.

“SCAN’s mission has always been to help seniors remain healthy and independent, and the growing senior population magnifies the need for enhanced education and resources in every community we serve,” said SCAN Chief Medical Executive Romilla Batra, M.D. “We’re currently serving seniors in Northern California through SCAN Health Plan, our Medicare Advantage plan. But these new programs aren’t limited to health plan members; they are free and open to the public, and that enables us to serve our communities in different and expanded ways.”

Local organizations interested in learning more about SCAN’s community programs or scheduling a program or workshop should contact Kapeela Diaz, manager of health promotion, at 562-637-7211 or at kdiaz@scanhealthplan.com.
