Schulte Brings Nearly Three Decades of Experience in Scaling and Developing Healthcare Market and Network Services

LONG BEACH, Calif., Jan. 11, 2023SCAN Group, a diversified not-for-profit healthcare company that operates SCAN Health Plan, one of the nation's largest and fastest growing not-for-profit Medicare Advantage health plans, today announced the promotion of Karen Schulte to President of Medicare. Schulte previously served as SCAN’s Senior Vice President of Network Management, overseeing the organization’s provider network and market performance.

"There are many exciting opportunities ahead for SCAN and I am pleased to have Karen at the helm of our growing Medicare business operations,” said Dr. Sachin H. Jain, CEO of SCAN Group and SCAN Health Plan. “As SCAN continues its trajectory of national growth and innovation, Karen’s deep understanding of SCAN and the healthcare industry make her the ideal person to bring our mission of keeping seniors healthy and independent to more older adults across the nation.”

In her new role, Schulte will lead the expansion of SCAN’s Medicare business and oversee SCAN Health Plan’s performance in existing markets.

“SCAN is a mission driven, member-centered organization that I truly admire and respect, so I’m very excited to take on this role,” said Schulte. “As President of Medicare, I am committed to preserving the unwavering commitment to members that SCAN is known for, while scaling and expanding the organization so that we can efficiently and successfully bring our mission to more people across the country.”

Karen is a SCAN veteran, having worked for the organization from 2006 to 2016 in various leadership roles. She then served as Chief Operating Officer of CareMore and Aspire Health, an Anthem (now Elevance) Affiliate, where she provided national leadership over market and management services operations for a $1.5B care delivery affiliate of Anthem’s Diversified Business Group.

Since returning to SCAN in 2021 to serve as Senior Vice President of Network Management, she has overseen SCAN’s provider network and ensured consistent, high-quality performance. Schulte has been instrumental in SCAN’s growth efforts, supporting the expansion of SCAN Health Plan into three new states and additional markets within California; leading the onboarding of new network partners; and launching SCAN Embrace (HMO SNP), SCAN’s Institutional Special Needs Plan (ISNP).

Schulte’s appointment comes on the heels of SCAN's recent news that it has entered into a definitive agreement with Oregon-based CareOregon to combine as a mission-driven not-for-profit healthcare organization under the name HealthRight Group, bringing together the expertise and resources of two nationally renowned organizations to improve access for people traditionally underserved by the US healthcare system. Upon closing, Schulte will continue her role as President of Medicare for HealthRight Group.
