(LONG BEACH, Calif. – July 24, 2015) — Sharon Jhawar, PharmD, MBA, CGP, corporate vice president of pharmacy for SCAN Health Plan, will be one of the lead presenters on a national webinar focused on the role retail pharmacists can play in improving the health of Medicare beneficiaries. The webinar is sponsored by Atlantic Information Services and will be held on August 6 from 1 - 2:30 p.m. EDT.

Joining Jhawar as faculty will be Rebecca Rabbitt, PharmD, vice president of Medicare Solutions for Express Scripts, and Alexis Levy, director of HealthScape Advisors. SCAN and Express Scripts are currently partnering in a “Quality Network Program” to encourage and reward pharmacists to take an active role in interacting with Medicare patients. Early results have shown that doing so can lead to an enhanced patient experience, improved medication safety and improved quality of care.

“Pharmacists are one of the most trusted of all healthcare professionals, and their frequent interactions with our members present enormous opportunities to positively impact patient health,” said Jhawar. “In a time of complex healthcare challenges and expectations concerning improved quality and performance, we are excited about this novel approach to improving member health and the potential impact on Star Ratings for SCAN. This effort continues to differentiate SCAN’s member-focused approach from others in the Medicare Advantage marketplace.”

The August 6 webinar will focus on the joint SCAN-Express Scripts demonstration program, which is showing positive results in areas such as reducing high-risk medication use and improving compliance with diabetes treatment guidelines. By working to align incentives and finding which pharmacies respond best to outcomes-based incentives, this Quality Network Program is paving the way for pharmacies and Medicare Advantage plans to more actively partner to improve care for seniors.

Among the topics to be discussed on the webinar include: How participating pharmacies were selected, what data is being shared with the pharmacies to aid their efforts, how SCAN and Express Scripts selected the measures to focus on in assessing the success of the program, and how such an initiative can affect Medicare Advantage plans’ Star ratings and overall quality of care in the future.
