SCAN Health Plan provides free senior sensitivity training to local businesses
(LONG BEACH, Calif. – May 6, 2014) — In honor of Older Americans Month, SCAN Health Plan is urging local businesses to learn more about the challenges that come with aging. Doing so will go a long way in helping businesses adapt to an aging customer base, according to the not-for-profit health plan. SCAN offers its Trading Ages™ senior-sensitivity program free to local businesses of all sizes, including those in Los Angeles and Orange counties.
“As older adults are living longer, healthier lives, this type of education is more important than ever,” said Sherry Stanislaw, general manager for SCAN in Southern California. “Baby boomers now entering their senior years represent a driving force in American businesses and will continue to have great earning and spending potential for years to come. Trading Ages helps businesses prepare for the challenges and exciting new opportunities brought about by the growing number of seniors.”
As a health plan that has focused exclusively on the needs of seniors for more than 35 years, SCAN is in a unique position to help people understand the aging process. SCAN’s Trading Ages senior-sensitivity training is an interactive workshop that provides a new appreciation of the challenges associated with aging. Participants experience, firsthand, age-related conditions such as hearing loss, vision changes, loss of dexterity and more through role-playing simulations. This interactive approach enables participants to better appreciate the physical, social and emotional aspects of aging.
As part of the two-hour program, participants learn how age-related changes can affect behavior and attitudes. Most importantly, Trading Ages teaches participants how to integrate this new understanding into their daily lives to immediately improve interactions with customers, colleagues and others.
“Learning the skills necessary to work effectively and improve interactions with older adults is essential for employers and employees, caregivers, children, grandchildren, and all those interacting with older adults,” added Stanislaw.
SCAN initially created the Trading Ages program as a way for its own employees and board members to better understand the needs and mindset of its health plan members. While the program continues to be mandatory for all SCAN employees, in recent years the health plan has taken it “on the road” and has been making it available, free of charge, to physician groups, community agencies, universities, businesses and other groups interested in enhancing their sensitivity in interacting with older adults.
