SCAN Health Plan Names Top-Performing Medical Groups

(LONG BEACH, Calif. – July 1, 2014) — SCAN Health Plan announced today the top-performing medical groups in its provider network for 2014. The nine medical groups honored each achieved an average of 4 stars or higher on SCAN’s internal quality metrics, which include a focus on preventive screenings, treatment of chronic conditions, and appropriate documentation to ensure that members get the care they need.

“Our providers are the critical link between SCAN and our members, and we greatly value their commitment and dedication,” said Chris Wing, chief executive officer of SCAN. “We are proud to partner with medical groups that share SCAN’s 35-year commitment to healthy, independent aging.”

The medical groups that received the top honors are all located in Southern California and combined serve approximately 42 percent of SCAN’s total membership. The top-performing medical groups are: Facey Medical Foundation, Greater Newport Physicians, HealthCare Partners, MemorialCare Medical Foundation, Monarch HealthCare, Primary Care Associates Medical Group, Riverside Medical Clinic, Scripps Health, and St. Joseph Heritage Healthcare.

“Each of these groups has demonstrated an exceptional passion to meeting or exceeding the quality standards that ultimately translate to better care for our members,” said Romilla Batra, M.D., SCAN corporate medical director. “They have a commitment to quality care that extends to all of their patients, not just SCAN members.”

SCAN’s internal quality metrics for physician groups are similar to the CMS Star Rating System for health plans. Under that system CMS ranks health plans on a one- to five-star basis, weighing such factors as clinical outcomes, access to preventive services such as screenings and vaccines, managing chronic conditions, preventive care, and consumer satisfaction.

SCAN Health Plan is one of the nation’s largest not-for-profit Medicare Advantage plans, currently serving 170,000 members in California. Further information may be obtained at scanhealthplan.com or on Facebook at facebook.com/scanhealthplan.
