SCAN Health Plan Corporate Medical Director to Conduct Webinar on Improving Outcomes Through Patient Engagement

(LONG BEACH, Calif. – April 30, 2014) — Romilla Batra, M.D., MBA, corporate medical director of SCAN Health Plan, will be the featured faculty member for an upcoming webinar exploring the innovative initiatives taking place at SCAN that improve outcomes for its Medicare members through patient engagement.

The webinar is sponsored by Healthcare Web Summit Media and will be held on Wednesday, May 14, from 11 a.m. – noon (PDT). Participants may register at http://healthwebsummit.com/scan051414.htm or by calling 209-577-4888.

“We know from experience and from national statistics that an estimated 40 percent of deaths in the United States are potentially caused by behavior patterns that could be modified by preventive interventions,” said Dr. Batra. “This relationship between patient engagement and improved outcomes is most seen with the Medicare population due to the greater level of resources required to manage a senior or disabled member.”

On the May 14 webinar, Dr. Batra will discuss the innovative programs that SCAN has developed to proactively engage Medicare Advantage members in preventive care in ways that improve quality outcomes. These programs include SCAN’s “Buddy” program (based on the care-navigator concept); “Health Check Records” (customized charts mailed to members to update them about preventive care opportunities); Wellness Clinics and the inventive SCAN Van that are making an important and measureable difference, generating interventions that can improve the overall health of defined populations.

What is the potential for patient engagement to improve outcomes? Statistics show that patients with chronic diseases normally take only 50 percent of their prescribed medication doses. One study found that 50 percent of patients did not follow referral advice and 75 percent did not keep follow-up appointments. “As an industry we need to do much better if we are going to truly serve those who rely on us and positively impact the efficacy of healthcare in America,” Dr. Batra said.

Dr. Batra will bring to her presentation extensive, hands-on experience in leading organizational efforts focused on chronic disease management and quality improvement, both on the health plan and provider group sides. In her role at SCAN, Dr. Batra sets clinical policies and procedures, provides physician oversight of select clinical programs, and helps design clinical initiatives to improve quality of care and drive CMS star ratings performance.
