Celebrate Older Americans Month

(LONG BEACH, Calif.) — During Older Americans Month in May, SCAN Health Plan is encouraging individuals, families and businesses to take the time to honor older adults for the contributions they have made – and continue to make – to our communities and our country. SCAN is a not-for-profit health plan that has focused exclusively on the needs of seniors for 38 years.
“As the U.S. population continues to age, more older adults are taking charge of their health, getting engaged in their communities, and making a positive impact in the lives of others,” said Chris Wing, SCAN’s chief executive officer. “Older Americans Month provides an opportunity to recognize the extraordinary older adults in our lives. We think it’s also a great time to learn a little more about the aging process so that we are treating them with the dignity they deserve.”
Wing says that honoring seniors this month can be as simple as making a phone call to a senior friend or family member. Other ideas include arranging a family get-together with older family members as your guests of honor, surprising your favorite older adults with flowers or ice cream, helping a senior learn new skills (such as the computer), inviting a more-active senior to a round of golf, or offering to do some errands or chores for an elderly neighbor. “The ideas are limitless, and what you do doesn’t need to be big or dramatic,” said Wing. “It just needs to demonstrate that you care.”
Businesses, too, can celebrate Older Americans Month by honoring their older employees or by having special promotions or rewards for older customers. “This month is also a wonderful opportunity to ensure that all employees understand the challenges that come with aging,” said Wing. “Such awareness can translate to increased compassion, patience and ultimately better customer service.”
Toward that end SCAN Health Plan makes available to businesses free of charge an award-winning senior-sensitivity workshop – Trading Ages™ – that allows participants to experience firsthand age-related conditions such as hearing loss, vision changes, loss of dexterity, and more through role-playing simulations. In addition to all SCAN employees participating in this program, through the years Trading Ages has been shared with physician groups, community agencies, universities, businesses and other groups interested in enhancing their senior sensitivity. Businesses interested in booking a free Trading Ages training workshop should call 800-636-9976 or send an email to TradingAges@scanhealthplan.com.
