(LONG BEACH, Calif. – April 9, 2013) — SCAN Health Plan announced today that once again this year it will co-sponsor and provide continuing medical education accreditation for the California Association of Long Term Care Medicine’s (CALTCM) annual meeting held April 26-27 in Los Angeles. The 39th annual meeting of CALTCM will focus on those strategies most needed to improve “person-centered care,” including increased communication among all participants in the healthcare process and enhanced care transition between a person’s hospital stay and their return home. The conference will also discuss the growing field of palliative care and how quality of life for individuals can be improved for those requiring management of ongoing symptoms.
In addition to co-sponsoring the conference and providing CME credits to qualifying attendees, two of SCAN’s medical directors will be part of the CALTCM faculty. Chief Medical Officer Timothy Schwab, M.D., will update attendees on the latest legislative news regarding “dual eligibles” (those who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid/MediCal) while Vice President/Medical Director Dan Osterweil, M.D., will join a pre-conference panel discussion on dementia care in a skilled nursing facility.
“Our ongoing relationship with CALTCM brings the organization and its members in contact with many premier provider groups and facilities throughout California while at the same time enhances SCAN’s focus on improving nursing home care,” said Dr. Schwab. “We are very proud of our partnership with CALTCM and the role it plays in SCAN’s ongoing education efforts.”
As a health plan dedicated exclusively to seniors and others on Medicare, SCAN’s sponsorship of the CALTCM conference is part of its longstanding commitment to better understanding the aging process and advocating on behalf of the needs of seniors. In March SCAN held its 11th annual “Leadership and Management in Geriatrics Conference” designed to equip professionals with the tools needed to change behavior in ways that lead to a better patient experience. Throughout the year SCAN offers healthcare professionals an array of online courses through its website – www.scancme.com – and also provides clinical guidelines, assessment tools, and literature regarding common geriatric medical conditions.
The CALTCM conference, entitled “Mastering Person-Centered Care through Improved Communication, Care Transition and Palliative Care” is expected to attract physicians, nurses, nursing home administrators and other healthcare professionals. It will be held at the Omni Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. In addition to SCAN Health Plan, co-sponsors include Aging Services of California, California Association of Health Facilities, California Culture Change Coalition, California HealthCare Foundation, Coalition for Compassionate Care of California, and Health Services Advisory Group.
