More Medicine Tips

  • Plan when you will take your medicine each day. Having a routine makes it easier to remember. Try one of these reminder systems:
    • Use a calendar to note each dose as you take it.
    • Get a pill organizer box and set it up ahead of time.
    • Set an alarm or timer for when the next dose is due.
    • Ask someone to call each day and remind you.
    • Note the date to refill on your calendar. Don't wait until you are out.
  • Keep medications in the container they came in. This avoids errors or mixing medicines that should not be mixed.
  • Save all your drug information sheets in one place. You want to be able to find them if a question comes up.
  • Keep medications out of sight and reach of children and/or pets.
  • Avoid drinking wine, beer or other alcohol when you are taking medicine. Some may not work correctly. Some can make you sick if taken with alcohol.
  • Don't take medicine in the dark. To avoid making a mistake, turn your light on before reaching for your pills.
  • Ask your pharmacist how to safely dispose of unused or expired medicines.
  • Remember to take all medicine with you when you travel. (For more info see our Travelers' Checklist –
