Almost half of all adults age 55 to 84-experience insomnia.
Knowing that your neighbors are also lying awake at night won’t
help you get to sleep, but perhaps some of the information here
will. Try the suggestions below, and give each a chance to work
before moving on.

 |
Establish a regular bedtime and routine. |

 |
Get up in the morning at the same time every day of the week (within 30 minutes). |

 |
Don’t nap. |

 |
Avoid caffeine, nicotine and alcohol. |

 |
Get regular exercise, but finish at least three hours before bedtime. |

 |
Eat a light snack before bedtime (but avoid heavy meals). |

 |
If you’re lying awake worried, try writing – jot down a list of things you don’t want to forget or chronicle things you’re concerned about – to help you “let go” and relax. |
Overall, make sure your sleeping area is comfortable, from your
mattress and bedding to the temperature of the room and the noise
level. And if you’re lying in bed and just don’t feel sleepy, get
out of bed and do something low-key until you feel drowsy.

Remember, some health conditions or medications can cause sleep
problems. If you have trouble sleeping for more than a week and
you can’t trace it to something like jet lag, a stressful event,
or allergies, talk to your doctor. For more tips on dealing with
insomnia, see page 333 in your Healthwise for Life book.

We are excited to tell you that SCAN has expanded its service
area. This is especially good news for Medicare beneficiaries in
the western in Ventura County – specifically the cities of
Ventura, Oxnard, Camarillo, Moorpark, Simi Valley, Santa Paula
and Fillmore. These communities were somewhat underserved by
health plans in the past, so we are pleased to offer SCAN as a
quality option.

Of course, opportunity wasn’t the only reason we moved into
Ventura. More important is the fact that we were able to contract
with quality healthcare providers like Buena Ventura Medical
Group, Valley Care IPA, and Regal Medical group with multiple
physician offices in the service area. Our hospital partners are
Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, and St. John’s Regional
Medical Center in Oxnard and Simi Valley Hospital in Simi
Valley.

For those of you with friends or relatives in our new service
area, be sure to let them know that SCAN is an option. SCAN will
bring them things like routine doctor visits, hospitalization and
coverage for brand drugs – for a $30 monthly premium. Or, if they
would prefer that information be mailed to them, have them call
toll free 1-877-870-4863.

While our headquarters remain in Long Beach, we will have a
permanent office in Ventura for our sales and care coordination
teams. This will enable the staff to get to know the resources of
the community well.

SCAN’s commitment to our members’ health and independence remains
at the forefront of all our efforts. We are confident in the
future of SCAN and our planned growth into new markets is further
evidence of our strength and geriatric health leadership. Rest
assured that while we are continuing to look for new
opportunities, our commitment is first and foremost to our
members.

Best regards,

David G. Schmidt
CEO
