(VENTURA, CA – April 12, 2010) — “Healthier Living,” a free program that provides participants with effective and practical coping strategies to manage their ongoing health conditions, will begin on May 3 at 8 a.m. at the SCAN Senior Resource Center, 1001 Partridge Drive, Suite 200, Ventura.
Provided in partnership with Stanford University, the Camarillo Health Care District and Partners in Care Foundation, the program includes 2-½ hour weekly workshops presented over a six-week period. The curriculum includes behavior modifications and coping strategies to enable participants to better cope with their chronic diseases, manage their medications and increase physical activity levels. Participants also work on effective communication skills with family, friends and health professionals.
“After completing these workshops participants demonstrate significant improvement in their self-reported general health,” said Steve Lehman, MPH, MBA, manager of the SCAN Senior Resource Center. “We all need to be active participants in our own health. This program teaches you how.”
Complimentary breakfast will be served to participants. Classes will meet Mondays: May 3, 10, 17, 24 and June 7. There will also be a class on Tuesday, June 1. Participants should be 65 or older, have a significant ongoing chronic disease, and agree to attend all six sessions. A waiting list will be established for future programs and referrals made to other community organizations offering this series. Call 805-658-0365 to sign up and see if you qualify.
