(November 1, 2007) —SCAN Health Plan today announced that it will continue to offer Medicare-eligible individuals in San Diego County two distinct benefit packages in 2008, both with comprehensive medical and prescription drug coverage. SCAN is one of California’s fastest-growing health plans available exclusively to seniors and other individuals on Medicare.
“Affordability and access to high-quality care is of importance to everyone these days, especially the seniors and others we serve,” said David Schmidt, chief executive officer of SCAN Health Plan. “In keeping with our not-for-profit mission, we’ve worked hard to develop an outstanding benefit package that addresses seniors’ concerns, wants and needs when it comes to their healthcare.”
As such, SCAN will continue to offer its basic benefit plan with no premiums and no deductibles. The SCAN Signature Plan will continue to be offered with a $59 monthly premium and no deductibles. With both plans primary care physician office visit co-payments are just $10, and there is no co-payment for annual routine physical exams or preventive screenings. The SCAN Signature Plan offers an expanded provider network, which includes the world-renowned Scripps Health.
Under the SCAN basic plan, members receive a generous prescription drug benefit (Medicare Part D) that includes unlimited coverage for generic medications on the SCAN formulary and coverage of up to $2,600 for brand name drugs (the limit is $3,000 with the Signature Plan). The co-payment for a 31-day supply of a generic drug from a SCAN-approved pharmacy is just $7 ($5 with the Signature Plan).
As always, SCAN members receive all of the basic benefits covered under Medicare including doctor visits, hospital care, emergency/urgent care, skilled nursing facility care and more. Beyond these core benefits, SCAN offers routine eye and hearing exams; transportation to the doctor’s office; plus SCAN On-Call™, a 24-hour nurse advice line; and access to emergency care worldwide.
In 2008 SCAN will offer a comprehensive in-home recovery benefit, which replaces the current in-home assistance benefit. The new benefits are available after a qualifying medical event and will include home-delivered meals, transportation escort services, personal- and custodial-level care.
“In addition to the health benefits we offer, members often tell us that one of the biggest benefits is the personal attention and individual focus they receive through SCAN,” said Schmidt. One example of this cited by Schmidt is the fact that all telephone calls are answered directly by one of SCAN’s specially trained member service representatives, not by an automated recording. “It’s those extra-added touches that mean a lot to seniors and really help to make us unique,” he said.
Currently celebrating its 30th anniversary, SCAN Health Plan is a not-for-profit organization focusing on the unique needs of people with Medicare. SCAN is one of California’s fastest-growing Medicare Advantage plans, currently serving more than 100,000 members in Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, San Diego, Riverside, Ventura and Kern counties.
