Chief Medical Officer of SCAN Health Plan

Participates in White House Conference on Aging

(LONG BEACH, CA – December 22, 2005) — Timothy Schwab, M.D., chief medical officer for SCAN Health Plan and a delegate to the 2005 White House Conference on Aging, said a myriad of important issues were discussed at the conference that concluded last week. As mandated by the Older Americans Act, the final report from the conference will be presented to the President and Congress by June 2006.

Among the resolutions passed, Dr. Schwab specifically applauded the emphasis on finding ways to ensure that older Americans have programs at their disposal which allow them to retain their mobility and independence.

“We know that remaining independent is an important part of healthy aging,” said Dr. Schwab. “I was happy to see that one of the top ten resolutions specifically addressed transportation – including to and from doctors’ appointments – which is so important and which is fully consistent with SCAN’s approach towards senior health issues.”

Dr. Schwab joined delegates from around the country at the three-day conference to vote on resolutions and develop implementation strategies that will help President Bush and Congress shape aging policies for the next ten years and beyond. A full listing of the resolutions can be found at www.whcoa.gov.

On another topic of great importance, and another of the top ten resolutions being recommended, Dr. Schwab praised his fellow delegates for their support of geriatric education and training for all healthcare professionals. “Only a small percentage of physicians in practice today have received any formal training or education in geriatrics,” said Dr. Schwab. “With our nation’s 78 million baby boomers beginning to turn 60 next month, it is absolutely critical that our physicians receive the training they need to properly care for aging adults. I am pleased to see the importance of this training heightened throughout the conference.”

A leading advocate on senior health and lifestyle needs, Dr. Schwab oversees SCAN’s medical policies, medical informatics and government relations. He is also responsible for strategic initiatives designed to enhance the healthcare experience for SCAN’s more than 75,000 members in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties.

In addition to his role at SCAN, Dr. Schwab participates in several professional organizations and has served as president of the California Society of Internal Medicine and the Long Beach Society of Internal Medicine. He has also played an active role in several committees of the American Society of Internal Medicine and the American College of Physicians and previously served as an assistant clinical professor for the School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Schwab previously served on the board of directors for Front Porch, a not-for-profit senior living organization.

Founded in 1977, the not-for-profit SCAN is one of the four largest Medicare Advantage Plans in all of California and consistently ranks as one of the state’s fastest growing. In addition to its health plan, SCAN also manages one of the largest and most successful Multi-Purpose Senior Service Projects (MSSP) in California providing community-based, long- term care and in-home personal-care coordination for low-income frail seniors.
