The City of Buckeye Senior Center Were Real Winners

in Virtual “Turkey Bowl” Tournament

SCAN Health Plan Arizona Sponsored First Wii Bowling Tournament for the Buckeye and Avondale Senior Centers

(PHOENIX, AZ – November 30, 2010) — Wielding nothing more than wireless remotes, a four-person team from the Buckeye Senior Center prevailed over the Avondale Senior Center team in the first ever Turkey Bowl Tournament. The competition was held at the Avondale Community Center and was sponsored by SCAN Health Plan Arizona, which provided the Wii game console, trophies and T-shirts.

Replacing the waxed wooden lanes and heavy balls was a television screen and light-weight remotes, but the level of enthusiasm was just as high as it would be in a traditional bowling alley. “Wii bowling allows more people to take part in this fun sport and engage in some healthy competition,” said Frances McCoy Avondale recreation coordinator of senior programs.

“SCAN Health Plan Arizona seeks opportunities to engage with local seniors in ways that support health, independence, camaraderie and fun,” said Tom Lescault, president of SCAN Health Plan Arizona. “We were thrilled to support senior centers in Avondale and Buckeye to make the Turkey Bowl possible.”

While Wii bowling simulates the actual sport, it allows players with physical restrictions to enjoy the game. “The seniors had such a great time this year, we hope to make this an annual event,” said Cinthya Quintana SCAN Health Plan Arizona’s Hispanic outreach coordinator.

For more than 30 years, SCAN Health Plan has been focusing on the unique needs of people with Medicare and today is the fourth-largest nonprofit Medicare Advantage plan in the United States. SCAN serves nearly 130,000 members in California and Arizona. SCAN Health Plan Arizona was recently named one of the area’s best places to work by the Arizona Business Journal.
