SCAN Health Plan to Host Symposium on Senior Healthcare
(LONG BEACH, CA - September 29, 2004) - To help physicians and
other healthcare providers better care for the community's
growing number of seniors, SCAN Health Plan will be co-sponsoring
the third Geriatric Symposium on October 9, 2004, that will
feature many of the areas top geriatric experts.

"In just eight years 77 million baby boomers will begin turning
65, and physicians and other local providers need to prepare for
that influx," said Stuart Levine, M.D., M.H.A., medical director
at SCAN Health Plan. "There are many issues surrounding
geriatric medicine, from pain management to end-of-life care,
that all need to be heightened within the medical community."

The daylong event will include lectures on how certain diseases
uniquely affect the geriatric population. Such diseases include
urinary incontinence, psychiatric issues, cardiovascular health,
endocrine and G.I. issues. The symposium will also feature a
discussion on advance-care planning. "Our goal is to help the
medical community more effectively manage common clinical
conditions affecting older adults," said Dr. Levine.

The Geriatrics Symposium, to be held at the Westin Long Beach
Hotel, is jointly sponsored by SCAN Health Plan and St. Mary
Medical Center. HealthCare Partners Medical Group was a key
participant in the course planning.
