SCAN Health Plan Arizona Launches Hispanic Outreach Program

(PHOENIX, AZ – October 11, 2010) — SCAN Health Plan Arizona announced today the launch of a Hispanic outreach program, designed to help Hispanic seniors and their caregivers be better informed about the resources and services available to them through the not-for-profit health plan.

“Arizona is home to a vibrant and burgeoning Hispanic population, and we are committed to making sure that the full breadth of our services are available and embraced by this important population,” said Tom Lescault, president of SCAN Arizona. “In keeping with our mission and focus on members, our goal is to provide comprehensive information and resources that will help Arizona’s Hispanic seniors stay healthy and independent.”

SCAN’s Hispanic outreach initiative will include a combination of prevention and education programs in partnership with various community organizations. As part of this SCAN will participate in grassroots events such as local health fairs as well as host open houses at the SCAN Connections Resource Center. The health plan will also launch a culturally relevant marketing campaign in both English and Spanish utilizing Hispanic media outlets.

SCAN has already partnered with Chicanos Por La Causa, a leading community development organization, on a focus group study with Hispanic seniors and caregivers. The study aimed not simply to gather statistics about this market, but to listen to the participants’ concerns so they may be included in the community outreach plan. SCAN intends to develop similar partnerships with other organizations to become more integrated into Arizona’s Hispanic community.

Heading the Hispanic outreach initiative for SCAN is Cinthya Quintana, a 20-year veteran in the healthcare field and a native of Guatemala who is bilingual in English and Spanish. “I am excited to join SCAN Health Plan Arizona and look forward to spearheading the Hispanic community outreach plan,” says Quintana. “This is a cause that is close to my heart, not just as a Latina, but as someone with a passion for building relationships and improving the lives of those around me. I hope to use my expertise to help SCAN fully bring its mission of caring and compassion into the Hispanic market.”

Founded by frustrated seniors who wanted an organization that addressed their specific needs, SCAN (Senior Care Action Network) provides affordable and accessible quality healthcare to seniors while continuing to look for innovative ways to serve Medicare members’ healthcare needs. Unlike most Medicare Advantage plans, SCAN has no commercial members, which allows it to dedicate 100 percent of its energy and programs toward serving older adults across the wide spectrum of aging.

“Since its inception, SCAN Health Plan has made it its goal to deliver to all seniors the right healthcare, in the right setting, at the right cost,” says Lescault. “Here locally this means addressing the needs of the Hispanic population and finding effective ways to communicate with all of our members in whatever language and whatever way they are most comfortable.”

Over the past 30 days, SCAN Health Plan Arizona has been named by Modern Healthcare magazine as one of the top 100 “Best Places to Work in Healthcare” and by Arizona Business Magazine and BestCompaniesAZ as one of Arizona’s “Most Admired Companies.”
