Free Health and Fitness Classes in November from SCAN Health Plan Arizona

(PHOENIX, Ariz. – October 17, 2011) — With the holidays drawing near, it’s even more important for seniors to remain active. SCAN Health Plan Arizona is making it easy with a variety of health and fitness classes designed specifically to meet the needs of seniors. Classes are open to SCAN members and the general public. All classes are free, but space is limited so pre-registration is recommended. Classes are held at the SCAN Connections Resource Center at 1313 E. Osborn Road in Phoenix, unless otherwise noted. Anyone interested in attending may call 602-778-3420. Classes to be held in November include:

  • Easy Tai Chi – A form of moving energy derived from Chinese martial arts. It consists of a series of slow, fluid movements done softly and gently using breathing techniques for healthy biorhythms.
    • Nov. 7 and Nov. 14 from 9:15 - 10:15 a.m. at the Sun Lakes Country Club (25630 South Brentwood Drive in Sun Lakes)
    • Nov. 1, 8 and 15 from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. at the SCAN Connections Resource Center
  • Intermediate Tai Chi
    • Nov. 1, 8 and 15 from 11 a.m. – noon at the SCAN Connections Resource Center
  • Zumba Plus – A Latin-inspired dance and fitness class for those 50 plus.
    • Nov. 3, 10 and 17 from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. at the SCAN Connections Resource Center
  • Yoga for Every Body, Mind and Soul – A gentle yoga class specifically designed for seniors with movement disorders. Students will develop an overall sense of well-being, improved mobility and confidence.
    • Nov. 3, 10 and 17 from 2 – 3 p.m. at the SCAN Connections Resource Center
“Not only are SCAN Health Plan Arizona’s classes a great way to improve your health or learn something new, they are also a great way to meet new people,” said Karen Richards, manager of SCAN’s Connections Resource Center. “SCAN is proud to have some of the best instructors for our classes that are knowledgeable about the specific needs of seniors.”

For more than 30 years, SCAN Health Plan has been focusing on the unique needs of people with Medicare and today is the fourth largest not-for-profit Medicare Advantage plan in the United States. SCAN has been serving the Arizona market since 2006 when it was awarded a contract by the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System to provide long-term care services to low-income elderly and physically disabled Arizonans enrolled in the Arizona Long-Term Care System (ALTCS) program in Maricopa County.

In 2008 SCAN began offering its Medicare Advantage plan in Arizona and now serves approximately 15,000 members in Maricopa and Pima counties.
