Exercise Program for Inactive Older Adults
to be Offered in Thousand Oaks
(August 18, 2010) — A nationally renowned program designed to help inactive seniors improve their overall health and lifestyle is being introduced in Thousand Oaks thanks to the combined efforts of SCAN Health Plan and Senior Concerns.
The award-winning program, called Active Living Every Day (ALED), teaches seniors the skills needed to bring physical activity into their daily lives. This initial session will begin on Monday, September 13, at 3:30 p.m. at Senior Concerns, 401 Hodencamp Road in Thousand Oaks.
The class meets once a week for 14 weeks and is now forming. Anyone interested in participating should call the SCAN Senior Resource Center at 805-658-0365 for more information and to see if you qualify. Participants should be 60 years or older and not regularly physically active. The program is being offered free to the first 20 qualified seniors. The full, 14-week commitment is required.
“Physical activity does not need to be strenuous or time consuming,” said Bob McCullagh, an ALED certified instructor and senior advocate with the SCAN Senior Resource Center. “The Active Living Every Day program helps people discover simple ways to make activity part of their day and help them reap the health rewards of being more active.”
The renowned Cooper Institute in Dallas developed Active Living Every Day, and in 2006 the program won a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Innovation in Prevention Award. SCAN introduced this successful program in Ventura in 2007. McCullagh worked for 10 years at the Cooper Institute after earning his bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology. He brings his knowledge, experience and enthusiasm to this wonderfully successful course.
