SCAN Health Plan Receives Governor’s

Exemplary Employer Award

(LONG BEACH, CA – May 27, 2005) — For the second year in a row, SCAN Health Plan has been honored by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger with a Governor’s Exemplary Employer Award for its support of older workers in its hiring and promotion policies, retention efforts, training programs and benefits packages.

“We are honored to again be recognized for our commitment to older workers who have so much to contribute to the well-being of our communities and our state,” said David Schmidt, chief executive officer of SCAN. “That commitment is woven into every thing we do, every decision we make.”

With more than 34 percent of SCAN’s workforce over the age of 40, the not-for-profit health plan actively recruits older workers and offers a variety of flexible programs including nonstandard work weeks, tuition reimbursement, on-site training, wellness programs, and competitive benefits. This sensitivity to the needs of the older worker has contributed to the health plan’s extremely favorable employee-satisfaction scores and lower-than- average turnover. In addition, the health plan has instituted a variety of programs that heighten its employees’ awareness of the needs of its senior members.

As an example, every SCAN employee and board member participates in a unique Senior Sensitivity Training program. “As a result, our workforce is sensitive to the issues and needs of the seniors they serve,” said Schmidt. “The training also helps many of our employees who are currently facing the issues of aging themselves or taking care of an aging parent.”

Awarded each year, in conjunction with Older Workers Month in May, the Governor’s Exemplary Employer Awards honor employers who demonstrate best practices in hiring and retaining older workers. The awards began in 1994 to increase public awareness of the important contribution older workers make to California’s economy. The Senior Worker Advocate Office of the state Employment Development Department chooses the semi-finalists from nominations submitted by large and small organizations throughout California. The semi-finalist list is sent to the Governor who selects the four recipients.

The awards are supported by private and public organizations including the Employment Development Department, Senior Worker Advocate Council, California Department of Aging, AARP, Forum on Older Workers, Sacramento Employer Advisory Council, California Chamber of Commerce, Transportation Management Association of San Francisco, and the California Employer Advisory Council.

Founded in 1977, SCAN is one of the four largest Medicare Advantage Plans in all of California and consistently ranks as one of the state’s fastest growing. Currently the health plan serves more than 70,000 seniors in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura Counties. In addition, SCAN also manages one of the largest and most successful Multi-Purpose Senior Service Projects (MSSP) in California providing community- based, long-term care and in-home personal-care coordination for low-income frail seniors.
